The Temple of 10,000 Buddhas, also known as Man Fat Sze is on a hill behind Sha Tin. 

Sha Tin is where the horse racing track of the Hong Kong Jockey Club is located. Is gambling a bigger religion to Hong Kong Chinese than Buddhism? I don't know but gambling certainly has a bigger monetary turnover.

Yuet Kai a Buddhist layman founded the Monastery at the beginning of 1949. It took eight years to complete all the buildings and another ten years to finish the 12,800 Buddha statues. Construction was finished in 1957.^{http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ten_Thousand_Buddhas_Monastery#cite_note-Film_Service_Office-2} Today, his preserved body is presented in the main hall of the monastery in a glass case.

The Main Temple and the Pagoda of the Monastery are graded as of historic significance. But Hong Kong tourism will not provide formal signage as they state that the pathway is not  meeting safe pedestrian standards. I know one thing - it is quite a steep walk but when you take a lot of photos like I did, it is not a problem. The whole main path upwards is lined with Buddha statues, all covered in gold paint.
